Abhinav hopes the tournament brings out more talent
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will conduct the fourth Junior Super Kings inter-school T20 tournament from December 26 across seven districts in the first phase.
The final phase will see the winners of the six districts and the winner and runner-up from Chennai compete in Tirunelveli from January 7, 2018 to identify the winner of the Junior Super Kings Championship.
The invitational tournament, sponsored by Muthoot Group, will have 16 schools from Chennai take part in the first stage.
In the second phase, the eight teams from the league stage will be divided into two groups of four each and the top two from each group will play in the semifinals.
Star Sports Tamil will telecast highlights of all matches till the semifinals, with the final having a deferred telecast.
Tamil Nadu Ranji team skipper Abhinav Mukund said: “I always used to look forward to playing school tournaments where you could come and show your talent, with your name appearing in the newspaper. Now these kids get a chance to play in front of television (sic). I hope the tournament brings out more talent.”
K.S. Viswanathan, former TNCA secretary and sports consultant, India Cements, said the tournament offers a chance to throw up talents not only for CSK but even the Tamil Nadu team.
In addition, Chennai Super Kings is also planning to start the CSK Academy in Chennai to develop its grassroots programme with involvement from CSK’s support staff and former Tamil Nadu players.
The tournament will also be partnered by M.S. Dhoni’s apparel brand Seven. Arun Pandey, CMD, Rhiti Group, the parent company of Seven and a close confidant of Dhoni, said: “Dhoni’s return is akin to a kid coming back home to see his mother. That is the kind of feeling he has. Dhoni always felt this place is like home.”
